Start Walking to reclaim your fitness & health and get your life back
This site is for anyone who wants to reclaim their health & fitness and get their life back. One thing we can all do to achieve this, is get moving again. We are designed to move. Movement is fundamental to our health & fitness.
And yet the reality for many of us is that despite our best intentions, our busy lives can just take over and we move less. It just happens. And both our health & fitness start to trickle away, so slowly that we don’t really notice.
I mean, I thought I was looking after myself. My diet was reasonable, but bit by bit I had stopped moving. Too much to do, too little time. I had fallen into the trap thinking; That’s just the way it is. I’m too busy. This is modern life!
Even just a couple of years of sedentary living can take their toll making it very difficult to get moving again.
Look out, because this can happen to any of us! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never really exercised or if you were super fit back in the day, the effects are the same.
And it can be really tough to turn this around.
But it just doesn’t have to be this way. And here’s WHY?
Because we are all designed to move
It doesn’t matter how fit or unfit you are. It doesn’t matter if you have never exercised in your life. Either way we all share two aspects of human physiology:
- The body is designed to move
- And the body is designed to work at different metabolic levels
We can all lose sight of this in this modern rather crazy world. And we can lose sight of the fact that walking is the most natural and probably even the most fundamental human movement.
And so we can all start walking to introduce movement back into our lives and enjoy the benefits it brings to our fitness and health.
Walking to build movement back into my life…
…to start reclaiming my health & fitness.
Of course I still had to find all this out. And it was only after several failed attempts to start exercising that I finally came to terms with the humbling realisation that the only exercise that I could manage now, was a brisk walk.
But I did know how “Heart-rated Exercise” works, heck I had been coaching Junior rowing athletes for some years. So I put together my plan using walking and Heart-rated Training methods to get me through the first 30 days, then the second 30 days, the next 30 days and so on. And it worked, I finally broke through the barriers that had been holding me back. I was moving again!
Now it’s Your Turn, Let’s Get You Moving Too
I learned the hard way that even just a couple of years of sedentary living can have a dramatic effect on our fitness & health. And that turning this around can be really tough. So this site is all about helping just about anyone to get moving again….

So, What could you do?
But even before you think about that, you should know that there is a surprise in store as well.
At some point in those 30 or 60 or 90 days you’ll find that it’s just working for you. You have built regular exercise back into your life. So much so that you look forward to the time slots you now set aside each week, taking time out of everything else to look after you. You are looking after your fitness & health.
You’re moving again and without realising you’re now doing and planning your own stuff. You need to know this:
If you can walk, you can do this!
But this is about so much more than just fitness & health…
…this is about your life!
Back in those dark days when my health & fitness were fading fast I had to face up to a horrible truth!
I was losing everything, even my family.
You see, some years before I made a promise to myself that I would take my kids hiking in the mountains before they l headed off to Uni and the big wide world. Friends and family had done that for me when I was a teenager, they opened my eyes to the great outdoors and I treasured those memories.
But when that time arrived for me to do the same for my own children
I wasn’t up to it. I failed my children. And that really hit me hard.
I failed to do this one thing I had promised myself that I would do for my own children. I knew at that moment that I had to take action to re-boot my life in order to re-connect with my family.
Looking back now I can say that of all the good things that have flowed on from reclaiming my health & fitness, hiking in the mountains with my kids tops the lot. It all happened a bit later than I had originally intended, but we made it.

Back on top of the world. The Scafells aren’t the biggest mountains in the world but they are just a bit special to me and now to my kids too!
And now we have we have plans afoot for other hiking adventures. It might be just a couple of us, or all of us. Either which way they have all developed the same love of the great outdoors and we’ve had some great times along the way.
But even now as I reflect back on everything that has happened, becoming a Firefighter, nearly winning The Vets Head (dang), running RatRace, racing half marathons, mastering the pull up and of course hiking the mountains with my kids, I can see that everything changed when I gave myself the time and space to make the most of the two aspects of human physiology we all share:
- The body is designed to move
- And the body is designed to work at different metabolic levels
You need to know that you can do this too. So I’ll say it again…
If you can walk, you can do this too!
The Big Health Warning Sign I missed
You need to know, there was something else going on.
Sure at the start of all this I realised that my health and fitness were failing even though I generally ate a reasonably healthy diet. But even so, I hadn’t been seriously ill for years. The odd cold, but other than that nothing.
I “sort of” kept a note of my weight and whilst I was maybe 5-6lbs over my ideal weight, I didn’t think I had anything to worry about. In fact my Body Mass Index or BMI Score came in as “healthy”. But something just wasn’t right.
We can all start to monitor our health
My Waist to Height Ratio revealed what my BMI Score did not. And this simple measure works for all adults, regardless of gender, ethnicity and body type.
If you are reading this and find yourself in the same situation, I just hope I can help you turn things around too.
Now the question is, what could you do?
Look, if I can grab my life back then anyone can. I’m not some super athlete, just a regular Dad who decided to go for it. I’ve had a lot of fun doing this and maybe, just maybe some of the solutions I found could help you re-boot your life too…
I got my life back in so many ways and with a few adventures thrown in.
So let me ask you a question.
If you set off walking and rebuilt your fitness & health over the next 3-4 months, where could that take you?
Where could you be? Back with your family, back in the gym, back with your team, back in the mountains, back in the boat?
What about you? What “sorta” challenge could take you out of your comfort zone? Maybe you “sorta” want to:
- Run a marathon
- Abseil down a cliff
- Hike one of the great outdoor trails
- Or just look great for your next beach holiday
So right now, the very first step is to set yourself some small achievable goals and just start!
What have you got to lose?

A Leap Into The Unknown – I mean who doesn’t want to jump off a 7m tower?
And look, I just want you to know – Anyone can do this
When I started my journey I was a real mess. All I could manage was a brisk walk. So I set out walking, then started adding little sprints. And as I got a little fitter I looked for all sorts of ways to make little gains. I hope I can encourage you to just start walking today, then who knows where your journey will take you…
